I Love Walt

Missouri Brave

Seems to be playing best ball of anyone on team right now. And has to be one of the fastest players in the country. Great recruiting by JL and great job by Geno of "Letting Walt be Walt," instead of trying to change him too much.

I love Walt. When his name first surfaced, I was thought it was a great signing, though there were actually some fans who were disappointed we signed another small guard who wasn't a great shooter and who didn't have a lot of other high D1 offers.

But is point guard his best position? He didn't play point guard in HS. Might he be even more valuable playing off the ball?

You know I agree with this statement!

The last coach put us in this position and we are trying to make the most out of it, D.S. is not the answer now and had Remy came he was not a point guard either , reason why the first player Geno went after was a point guard.

Sorry, but did you forget that the last coach left us with an all-conference point guard?

Sam was supposed to exhaust his eligibility, so technically he did leave us in that position. If Sam didn't get hurt we'd be in the same PG pinch with either coach.

As for Walt, I'd like to see him more as a 2 but there's not much of a choice this year. Not really sure what should be done, so I'll let the men getting paid to make these decisions make this one :)

No one new for sure whether Sam was going to be healthy enough to play so yes he left us without a point guard. What was the backup plan if Sam could not play? These are just some of the reasons why Jim was not successful as he never looked into the future.

But JL never failed to recruit to fill his needs (except when injuries happened during the season) especially point guard. If SM had exhausted his eligibilty, he would have have recruited a suitable replacement.
There are consequences to changing coaches, and players leaving are the expected result.
It is a real stretch to try to blame the last coach for that.

Again you are twisting facts. I am pretty sure that if the previous coach was still here, and Sam couldn't recover, he would have used one of the scholarships that opened up to recruit another point guard. But also, JL believed Remy could play the point.

This is a fact: No one new if Sam would recover and be able to play at 100% this year. fact 2 Remy is not a point guard and neither was Walt.
Now maybe Les was going to use Remy at the point but from what I have seen so far of him at Indiana he is not ready yet.

There are a lot of things we can criticize Jim Les for, and plenty of people have, but he knew the importance of having quality point guard play in his system, and he always had good point guards.
So blame him for whatever you want, but as I've already said, when he left this team had an All-MVC point guard, along with another All-MVC player in TB and a number of other fine players who are the top players on this year's team. He also recruited one of the top 5 point guards in the state of Illinois for 2011, and another player in RA capable of playing the point (and I'll trust his opinion on that ahead of yours if you don't mind).

But anyone who wants to continue to try to distort this and make JL the problem, go ahead.

If Remy was going to be a PG I'll trust Les' (and your) word for it, I suppose.

You're probably right in one respect. If you are going to attack Les' recruiting, PG is not the place to attack. The past few years, Ruffin/Franklin/Sammy, our PGs were good enough to win. His big roster mistakes were elsewhere.

I think it's time to quit blaming Coach Les for anything and applauding him for anything. I didn't want him fired, but he is gone and I think he's happy where he's at. Move on people.

I'll always like Walt for showing up to the Duke game and giving us one positive in an otherwise tough situation. After all, all-time college basketball legend SM was unavailable in that game so we had no chance.

How great was it when Coach K stopped Walt after the game for 10 seconds or so and talked into his ear?

I'll provide the snicker of the day...just a couple months ago someone compared Walt to TCS and said he was worried because Walt reminded him of TCS...

I hoped Jim Les was going to do well and yes he had a lot of good point guards in his system, I do think he was not treated fairly and should have gotten 1 more year.
His biggest mistakes were in his recruiting in that he went out and got what he thought were the best players available and did not recruit to team depth as when we lost certain players we had no clear backups at that position, why Jake had to guard 4 position players last season because of 0 depth at that position, also why Salley was stuck playing center and Egolf too because we had no true post player until Prosser came aboard, way too many players were having to play positions that they were not capable of which was why we ended up with mediocre seasons . I thought because of the injuries and his contract he would get a final chance this season but he didn"t so I have moved on.

Geno's very first move was to being securing depth at the point guard spot...
funny how misinformed some are...but I think Geno knows a thing or two about point guards
-- he mighta even played the position once or twice...

When the pool of available players was thin in the spring - he still tried to get a PG
and for the Class of 2012 - securing a PG was his 1st priority...
BUT most people know that the first guy he offered and was going to get - suddenly became unavailable - so he went right out and secured another commitment from Ka'Darryl Bell....

Walt is being forced to play an unfamiliar spot and is doing the best he can given the circumstances...and the current situation is secondary to fallout not to Geno's choosing.
